German Tests for College
The GLS offers a 2-year sequence of classes for students to prepare for the AP test. A reasonable expectation, is that a student would have 3-4 years of HS German and/or be clearly past the A2 level.
Seal of Biliteracy
The GLS is be responsible for administering both tests (ELA and German AAPPL), unless the student sets up an individual agreement with their HS, that the GLS administers the German part for them/the HS and the HS incorporates the results. That agreement would have to happen at the district level
AP German Exam, High School Flex Credit, and the Ohio Seal of Biliteracy at the German Language School Cleveland (GLS-CLE)
We have options for students who need high school credit for German classes, who are looking to verify their German ability for the Ohio Seal of Biliteracy, and/or are interested in preparing for the AP German exam.
There are fewer and fewer high schools in Northeast Ohio offering German classes, and even fewer options for people who speak German already and would like to certify their German skills in order to earn the Seal of Biliteracy or AP college credit.

The GLS-CLE offers courses to prepare you for the AP German exam. You must register at your school in the fall, the AP Exam is given a morning during the first two weeks of May, as assigned by the College Board.
You must make arrangements with your high school for flex credit or AP credit or independent study credit, as applicable. Be sure to verify with your high school counselor their deadlines and processes for applying for flex credit or for declaring an intention to take the AP German exam as an independent study or through our school.
By taking the AP exam with the GLS-CLE, you can indicate which colleges receive your scores.
Scoring well on the AP exam can also assist you in earning your Seal of Biliteracy through your high school for graduation, by certifying your German ability*.
*Please note that the GLS-CLE cannot issue the Seal of Biliteracy itself, because we neither certify English language ability, nor issue high school diplomas.
Once you have completed the AP German exam, you will need to share the results with your high school for credit for the Seal of Biliteracy.
To claim the college credit from the AP German exam, you will need to have the results sent to the college or university you are applying to. The College Board (creator of the AP exam) allows for that through your portal in their system.
The German Language School Cleveland focuses on speaking and listening during the early grades, then works on reading and writing, building up in an age-appropriate manner to high school level German language instruction. Culture is intertwined in all classes and events held at the GLS-CLE.
The Ohio Department of World Languages and Cultures along with ACTFL (American Council for the Teaching of Foreign Languages) estimate that multiple hours of language contact are required to meet B1/Intermediate Low proficiency, the level needed for the Seal of Biliteracy. The GLS-CLE recommends 2 years of our test prep course with us to prepare you to reach this goal.
